Artist Statement

For several years, I have been looking for ways to pursue my own mark taking relegating subject matter to a place of vagueness. In order to do this, I have been allowing myself to paint whatever comes to my canvas, adjusting the paint strokes and colors as I go, working toward a piece that pleases me for all the recognized standards of art and visual appeal, but which comes from an unknown impulse. Most of these pieces are surprises and are abstract in character. However, little motifs and repeat shapes continue to appear along with some recognizable images such as birds. I feel I owe myself this time of experimentation and am looking forward to understanding more about the impetus for these paintings. I have a strong affinity for the out-of-doors, and have loved painting landscapes, local and coastal scenes. At first, these were fairly traditional representations. After a while the abstract qualities of the compositions began to dominate the images. At the same time, I began to work with repeated images and variations, working out figure and ground issues. Since all of these styles appeal to me, I try to let each new painting benefit from the insights I gain from the ones I have just finished.
